                                                            LET’S CELEBRATE

                                                 September 5, 2010

LABOR DAY

Lord give success to the work of our hands.”  On this Labor Day, we recognize the talents given to every human being for the betterment of the individual and for the good of society.   May we recognize that all our gifts and abilities come from our parents, fostered by our family, teachers, and professors- but ultimately our gifts and talents come from God.  May we use our time and talent constructively. On this Labor Day weekend, we remember the people of this nation who have preceded us and recognize their labor in passing on to us a better America. May we do likewise in passing on a better society to those who will follow us. On this Labor Day weekend, we honor workers and those who are retired. We remember the many people who cannot find full employment today. We hope and pray that as time goes on things will get better. This is America! We KNOW they will.

WELCOME

On this Labor Day weekend,  we welcome  visitors to our parish of Our Lady of Tahoe. Also, on this special weekend, we welcome the chief shepherd of our diocese, Bishop Randoph Calvo. We pray that God will continue to bless his labor in the Vineyard of the Lord. And, may his priests, deacons, and religious work closely with him in building up the Kingdom of God  in the Diocese of Reno.

THE NATIVITY

This Wednesday, we celebrate the birthday of Mary, the Mother of the Lord. According to tradition, her parents were Joachim and Ann. Loving parents as they were, they fostered in their daughter a spirit of prayer and love for the Lord so much  that when the moment came when she was asked the Great Question, she did not hesitate to respond with her blessed words, “I am the handmaid of the Lord.” And so, the Word became Flesh and lived amongst us…...Jesus, Redeemer, Lord, Savior, Lamb of God, The Great Amen, The Alpha and the Omega, and our Friend…..HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARY!

A SPIRITUAL FRIEND IN HEAVEN

St Peter Claver, Saint of Negro Missions,  was born of impoverished parents in 1580. After his ordination in 1616, he dedicated himself to the service of the Negro slaves—a work that would last for thirty-three years mostly in Cartagena (modern Colombia), the principle slave market of the New World. He labored unceasingly for the salvation of African slaves and the abolition of the Negro slave trade. Boarding the revolting inferno of the slave ships, he would offer whatever poor refreshments he could afford, care for the sick and dying, and instruct the slaves through Negro catechist before administering the Sacraments. He followed them and prevailed upon their masters on plantations to treat them humanely. Fr.Claver died in 1

IN YOUR NAME

Needless to say, our first responsibility is absolutely the financial and spiritual support of our local parish. Because of your generosity and the living of the Gospel, there is an Outreach program in the parish. May I share with you some of the activity that we do in your name as parishioners and friends of Our Lady of Tahoe:

The Outreach Program at OLT began in 1991 to assist 10 families.  Currently, it helps 68 families-over 400 local people (200 adults + 200 children).  Also, we assist 10 additional families on the “wait list” with any extra food we may have to distribute. We provide supplemental food boxes that contain- eggs, cheese, fresh vegetables, canned goods, meat, tortillas– this constitutes a balanced diet. 35 parish volunteers help distribute approximately #60 of food into boxes for each family the 3rd Friday of each month. We spend about $2000 a month purchasing food at wholesale prices.

This program continues because of generous donations from parishioners and visitors to our parish. Please be generous with your contributions so that this very important OUTREACH  PROGRAM can continue.  The second collection today is for Outreach. Thank you!

MY DOG CARLOW SAYS!  “Be the good God made you to be.”

“ And you know, our Sundays are better than Dairy Queen.”

SCRIPTURE: Remember to join us on Wednesday at 10:00 AM in the parish hall for a sharing of Sacred Scripture. Presently, we are studying the Gospel of St. Mark. Please bring your Bible.

COLLECTIONS

Please remember our spiritual home at the Lake where we were fed and nourished on Word and Sacrament and, in doing so, consider a remembrance in a Will or Bequest. Thank you so much for your generosity in last Sunday’s collection. The regular collection came to  $3715. The Second collection for Parish needs was $1232.  You are most generous people and God bless you!.
